Shelly Irvine is a Senior Managing Director in FTI Consulting’s Forensic & Litigation Consulting segment, where she specializes in intellectual property (IP) disputes, valuation, and strategy. With more than 25 years of experience, she advises clients and counsel globally on complex issues including damages quantification, expert testimony, licensing, and the valuation of intellectual assets. Her work spans a broad range of industries such as telecommunications, life sciences, semiconductors, clean energy, cloud computing, and manufacturing.
Ms. Irvine is widely recognized for her expertise in assessing economic damages in patent, copyright, and trademark infringement cases, as well as trade secret disputes. She conducts detailed financial analyses, market assessments, and valuation studies, often evaluating the contribution of patented technologies to commercial products and applying evolving legal frameworks. Ms. Irvine frequently assesses the value of Standards Essential Patents (SEP) and Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) royalties.
In addition to her dispute work, Ms. Irvine advises companies, private equity firms, and startups on IP strategy, portfolio valuation, licensing negotiations, and commercialization. She has significant experience helping organizations maximize the value of their intellectual property through partnerships, transactions, and growth strategies, particularly within technology-driven sectors.
A recognized thought leader, Ms. Irvine frequently speaks at industry conferences and lectures at leading institutions including UC Berkeley, Stanford, University College London, and the University of Tokyo. She has been recognized in IAM Patent 1000 for her deep industry insight and mastery of patent damages case law.
Ms. Irvine holds a B.S. in Economics from Santa Clara University and an MBA in Finance from the University of California, Berkeley and is a Certified Licensing Professional.
