Tim Pohlmann is Managing Director Americas and Director for SEP Analytics at LexisNexis Intellectual Property Solutions. He leads the company’s commercial business across the Americas, including sales, customer success, and marketing and is responsible for driving regional growth and market strategy.
Alongside his role at LexisNexis, Tim is a Venture Partner at eCAPITAL, where he advises on investments in data-centric AI startups, helping evaluate technologies, markets, and commercial potential.
Tim is the founder of IPlytics, the market-leading platform for Standard Essential Patent (SEP) intelligence. He built the company from the ground up and served as CEO for more than a decade until its acquisition by LexisNexis in 2022. Under his leadership, IPlytics became the industry’s leading source for SEP ownership, patent declarations, standards contributions analytics, supporting SEP licensing, litigation, and investment decisions across the world’s most important technology standards.
His journey started with research. During his PhD, Tim was among the first researchers to systematically analyze SEP data, focusing on studying SEP owners’ licensing strategies. Rather than leaving the research in academia, he turned it into a company. Before founding IPlytics in 2014.
Today, Tim is one of the best-known voices in the global standards and patent ecosystem. Over the past 15 years, he has delivered keynote speeches and moderated discussions at leading international conferences on SEPs, FRAND licensing, patent pools, and increasingly on the intersection of AI and intellectual property.
He is a frequent contributor to publications including IAM, IPWatchdog, and Managing IP, has authored book chapters and numerous peer-reviewed articles, and his research has been featured by the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, CNN, and The Economist, among many others. Tim has been recognized in IAM Strategy 300: The World’s Leading IP Strategists for eight consecutive years and also serves as an adjunct lecturer on patent strategy, standards, and innovation economics.
